Analyzing the Curricular Approach of the Undergraduate Education on Information Systems in Brazil

The first undergraduate programs on Information Systems (IS) appeared in Brazil in the 1980’s and had a considerable expansion since the following decade. Since these programs are still quite recent and in the process of consolidation, it is important to evaluate the curricular approach of existing IS programs in contrast to the official requirements and prescriptions, so as to verify whether those programs are being able to meet all professionals and educational demands in the field. In the pursuit of this goal, this paper provides a detailed mapping of the curricular approaches of Brazilian IS undergraduate programs, in order to understand in practice which are the courses taught at IS programs in Brazil. For doing so, this paper employs a sample of 50 (fifty) IS undergraduate programs of Higher Education Institutions in Brazil, selected according to quality indicators. The curriculum of each IS program in the sample is analyzed and compared to the Model Curriculum for IS undergraduate programs of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC).
